KEI (the 501c3 non-profit organization behind Katsucon) is honored to be hosting the Cosplay Tent at the 52nd Annual Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival this Saturday (April 14th, 2012 - 11:00 AM-6:00 PM). Presented by the Japan America Society of Washington DC, this year’s festival marks the 100th anniversary of Japan’s gift of the Cherry Blossom trees to the US, and the program is fabulous! Come see this spectacular event, and don’t forget to stop by and see us while you’re there!

Some of you may recall that everyone registered with Katsucon, who stayed three or more consecutive nights at the Gaylord in our room block during Katsucon 18, was automatically entered into the Katsucon Thanksgiving Contest. We’re very excited to announce that the winners are:
Each winner will receive four (4) all weekend VIP passes for Katsucon 19 (2013), four (4) K19 T-Shirts, and one free room night at the Gaylord National Harbor Resort and Convention Center (for use with Katsucon’s room block during Katsucon 19).

Those old schoolers might remember the “Special Stage” in the Sega’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.” You are running, non-stop, over checkered squares while you have to hop over certain blue spheres in a square pattern to turn them into rings. The music goes faster and faster as your speed increases. You hope you don’t hit a red sphere, or the level ends.
That’s what this convention was like for us.
Lots of running around, hopping over things, and making rounds to our departments in ever faster speeds in patterns. There certainly were a lot of you. As Christine sped around in her wheelchair, Grig was running about, wearing out a new pair of shoes. That’s seriously in his budget: one new pair of shoes per con. He logged in 35 miles on Saturday last year before his pedometer broke when he hit a red sphere.
And we wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Most of the staff here are all anime fans. We’re not employees, we’re all volunteers. The only difference between attendees and staff is we have more meetings and see less anime. So why do we do it? Because our attendees are simply the best in the entire anime community. They are happy, friendly, creative, skilled, and amazing people. Also, we’re a bit crazy. You don’t have to be crazy to run a convention like this, but it certainly helps.
We’d like to thank everyone who made this circus worth it at the end of a very long weekend. A big thanks to our loyal and skilled staff, which money couldn’t buy in any industry. A humble bow to guests who we chose based on how awesome and fan-friendly they are, some of whom showed up despite illness and overdue personal projects. A special thanks to the Symphonic Anime Orchestra, Japanese Embassy, and the World Cosplay Summit. We’d like to thank the weather gods for no blizzards. As always, thank you The Gaylord Hotel and Resort at the National Harbor for hosting us all weekend; your professionalism and attention to detail rivals anything we have ever worked with.
But the biggest thanks goes to the attendees: the cosplayers, the gamers, and the fans. You’re simply the best. You make this all worth it.
See you back at the Gaylord on President’s Day Weekend, Feb 15-17, in 2013. Our theme will be celebrating the Japanese Festivals, focusing on the Kabuki.
